Frequently Asked Questions
From connecting your first SMS gateway to running OTP verification at checkout, this page covers what WooCommerce store owners, admins, and developers ask most.
Getting Started
What is Texty?
Texty is a WordPress plugin that sends SMS notifications from your store. It connects to your own SMS gateway account and messages customers, admins, and Dokan vendors automatically as orders, payments, and accounts change.
Is Texty free to use?
Yes. The core plugin is free on WordPress.org. It covers WooCommerce order notifications for customers and admins, new user and comment alerts, Dokan vendor notifications, SMS logs, and delivery metrics. Texty Pro adds SMS consent capture and OTP phone verification for stores that need those features.
Do I need a developer to set up Texty?
No. Setup happens entirely in the WordPress admin: install the plugin, paste your gateway credentials, and switch on the notifications you want. There is no code to write and no theme changes to make.
How do I know if my gateway is connected correctly?
Send a test SMS to any number from the Texty settings screen. A delivered test confirms the credentials, and the SMS log records the gateway response so you can see exactly what came back.
SMS Gateways and Costs
Which SMS gateways does Texty support?
Texty supports major SMS gateway providers including Twilio, Vonage, Plivo, and Clickatell. You connect the account you already have, and Texty sends every message through it.
Does Texty charge per SMS?
No. You pay your gateway directly at their rates. Texty adds no per-message markup and takes no cut of what you send.
Which gateway should I use?
Whichever one delivers best in the countries you sell to. Coverage and per-message pricing vary by region, so compare the rates for those countries before committing.
Can I switch gateways without reconfiguring my notifications?
Yes. Your notification settings and message templates are stored separately from your gateway credentials, so switching providers means entering new credentials and sending a test SMS.
Do customer phone numbers leave my server?
Only to your gateway, and only when a message is sent. Credentials and logs stay on your own server, and nothing is routed through a service of ours.
Notifications and Customization
Which WooCommerce events trigger SMS notifications?
The order statuses WooCommerce already emits, from placed and on hold through processing, completed, cancelled, and refunded, plus failed payments. Admin alerts and Dokan vendor notifications run off the same events.
Can I edit the SMS message for each event?
Yes. Every notification has its own template, and order, customer, and store details drop straight into the text you write.
Can I disable specific notifications?
Yes. Each notification has its own switch, so you can send order updates to customers while leaving admin or vendor alerts off, or the other way round.
Who receives admin notifications?
Any numbers you list in the admin alert settings. Add one number for yourself or several for a team, and each one gets the same message.
Can I add custom notification types that Texty does not include?
Yes, with a little code. Texty exposes WordPress hooks, so a developer can fire a message from any action your site already triggers.
Dokan Integration
Does Texty work with Dokan?
Yes. Texty reads the Dokan marketplace structure and sends each vendor alerts for their own products rather than for the whole marketplace.
Which Dokan events trigger vendor SMS?
New orders containing their products, order status changes, and withdraw requests and their approvals. Store admins keep an alert stream separate from the one vendors receive.
Do vendors need to configure anything to receive SMS?
No. Vendors only need a phone number on their profile. You enable the vendor notifications once from the admin and they apply across the marketplace.
Texty Pro
What does Texty Pro add?
SMS consent capture at checkout and OTP phone verification, with the controls that go alongside them. Everything in the free plugin stays exactly as it is.
Does Texty Pro add more SMS gateways?
Pro sends through the same gateway integrations as the free plugin. You keep the provider account you already use, and Pro adds consent capture and phone verification on top of it.
Does upgrading to Pro affect my existing settings?
No. Your gateway credentials, templates, and notification switches carry over untouched. The Pro features appear beside them, switched off until you turn them on.
How do I activate my Texty Pro license?
Install the Pro plugin alongside the free one and paste your license key on the Texty license screen. Activation unlocks consent capture and OTP verification straight away.
SMS Consent Capture
What is SMS consent capture?
A checkbox at checkout that asks the customer to opt in to SMS updates. Only shoppers who tick it receive messages, so every text you send is one they agreed to.
Does the consent checkbox work with block checkout?
Yes. The checkbox renders in both the classic shortcode checkout and the WooCommerce checkout block, with no theme changes needed.
Can I customize the consent label and disclaimer text?
Yes. The label beside the checkbox and the disclaimer beneath it are both editable, so the wording can match the language your policies already use.
What gets stored per order when a customer consents?
The consent choice is saved against the order alongside the phone number and the time it was given, so you can show when and how a customer opted in.
Is the consent capture TCPA and GDPR compliant?
It gives you the explicit opt-in and the per-order record those regimes expect. Compliance also rests on your own wording and policies, so have your legal advisor review them.
OTP Phone Verification
What is OTP phone verification?
A one-time passcode sent by SMS that the customer types back in to prove the number is theirs. It catches mistyped and throwaway numbers before they reach your order list.
Where can OTP verification be triggered?
At account signup and at checkout. Enable either on its own or both together, depending on where unverified numbers cause you trouble.
Does OTP work with block checkout?
Yes. Verification runs in both the classic shortcode checkout and the WooCommerce checkout block.
Can I require OTP only for guest customers?
Yes. Verification can be limited to guests, so returning customers with a verified number on file are not asked again.
How long does an OTP code stay valid?
Codes expire after a short window you set in the OTP settings. Once a code lapses the customer can request a new one without leaving the page.
Troubleshooting
SMS messages are not sending. Where do I start?
Send a test SMS from the Texty settings. If the test fails, the gateway credentials or the account balance are the place to look; if it succeeds, check that the notification you expect is switched on.
A test SMS works but order notifications are not sending.
The gateway is fine, so either the notification is off or the order never reached the status it listens for. Check the switch for that notification and the status the order actually moved to.
The logs show a failed status. What does that mean?
The gateway rejected the message. The log stores the error code and the gateway response beside the entry, which usually names the cause: an unreachable number, a missing country code, or an empty balance.
A customer says they did not get the SMS but the log shows a sent status.
Sent means your gateway accepted the message. Delivery after that sits with the carrier, so check the delivery report on your gateway for that message and confirm the number, country code included.
Will Texty send SMS on my staging or development site?
It will, if the notifications are enabled and real credentials are in place. Switch the notifications off on staging, or point it at test gateway credentials, so copies of live orders do not text real customers.
SMS Logs and Metrics
Can I see a full history of all SMS sent?
Yes. The SMS log keeps every message with its recipient, its status, and the gateway response, so you can trace exactly what went out and when.
Can I filter the SMS log?
Yes. Narrow the log by status, date, and recipient to find the messages behind a single order or a run of failures.
Where do I see delivery rates and SMS volume?
On the Texty dashboard. It shows sent, failed, and overall delivery rate alongside your SMS volume over time.
